2020 Sangiovesé
Forget everything you think you know about this Italian grape variety, and get ready for a powerhouse wine, LA Style. One of the few gems of the 2020 vintage, this wine hails from Villa Cresta in Bel Air, overlooking the Los Angeles Basin and Pacific ocean.
Tasting Notes
Dark black cherries, candied plums, and flash of dark chocolate and blackberry show on the rich inviting nose. The palate is intense and structured, with juicy dark fruits and a decadent core of balanced earth and tannin. The velvety mouthfeel expands into the elegant finish.
Production Notes
Typically we pick grapes in Los Angeles based on ideal ripeness, with acid as a secondary concern. The site of the Villa Cresta Vineyard, high in the hills of Bel Air, is graced with cooler temperatures and a distinct ocean influence. This year the fruit reached pick-able ripeness, but acid levels remained too high to harvest, and we ultimately waited for the acids to fall, resulting in one of the most robust, ripe wines that we’ve ever made. The fruit was clod soaked and pressed into once-filled French oak, where it aged for 30 months before blending with Petit Verdot from Paso Robles. 30 cases produced.
